Senator Green Initiated Online Petition for Coal

October 14, 2009

Senator Mike Green (D-Raleigh) has initiated a state wide online petition drive in support of WV coal. The Raleigh county Senator, who chairs the Senate Committee on energy and mining, is petitioning the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Obama Administration to quickly review and approve the 23 pending West Virginia mine permits the EPA has targeted and called for further review.

EPA has stated that these 23 West Virginia mining permits, as currently proposed, “need more review under the federal Clean Water Act (CWA) because they raise potentially significant water quality and environment issues.” Senator Green believes these permits should be reviewed by the same requirements as other permits with regard to the current CWA – not scrutinized by last minute EPA decisions.

“Join me and support this petition for a fair and timely review system,” said Green. Those interested in showing their support can log on to www.supportwvcoal.com. “Let your voice be heard immediately. It’s too important for everyone to go online and sign this petition today to help keep WV families working,” said the Raleigh County Senator.
